School and kindergarten checkroom – characteristics and requirements

Infrastructure for children and young people must meet certain requirements and have the appropriate approvals. This is a key element for maintaining safety. It is no different for kindergarten and school checkrooms, which must meet certain standards, and should be designed according to standards and regulations. What parameters must checkrooms in schools and kindergartens meet, and what equipment must they contain?

Locker rooms in schools and kindergartens – what should they be like?

For outer garments and attire for physical education classes – two types of locker rooms are most common in schools and kindergartens.

In kindergartens, the checkroom is the front room that both children and caregivers encounter, so it should be inviting in its appearance, a useful, functional and fully safe part of the kindergarten infrastructure. It is important to remember that children are demanding and the appearance of the locker room must encourage them to enter. Often coming to the kindergarten is associated with stress for them, because they are separated from their caregivers, so the entrance area, which is the checkroom, must be friendly to them – also in terms of color. Therefore, designers of kindergarten checkrooms must take into account not only the dimensions of the checkroom and its adaptation to the age and height of the student, but also the overall appearance and color.

Not all schools, on the other hand, are equipped with locker rooms for outerwear. They are less common in secondary schools. Their presence in educational institutions is primarily practical and makes it easier for children and young people to move around safely (they don’t have to take their jackets with them every time they change class). In contrast, locker rooms used before physical education classes in schools are mandatory. This requirement is defined by a legal act, which is Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of April 12, 2002. on the technical conditions to which buildings and their location should conform (Journal of Laws of 2002, No. 75, item 690, as amended).

A school locker room, used before and after physical education classes, is defined as a hygienic and sanitary room, so it must have a certain size and technical conditions – in accordance with standards. This is defined by the Ordinance on safety and hygiene in public and non-public schools, and indicates that schools and kindergartens can purchase infrastructure elements that have approvals and certificates.

School changing room – requirements

Both the school and kindergarten checkroom should be functional and properly landscaped so that it is safe and students can move freely in it.

Chapter 6 from Section 76 of the Ministry of Infrastructure Ordinance of April 12, 2002, which deals with hygiene and sanitation facilities, reads that:

  • The changing room should have ventilation,
  • The height of the checkroom should be a minimum of 2.5 meters,
  • The walls of the room should be at least 2 meters high, and must be easy to clean and must not take in moisture,
  • The flooring in the school locker room must be easy to wash, non-slip and non-absorbent,
  • Checkroom doors should open to the outside of the room.

In schools you can also find closet lockers and those located in the corridor (for jackets and textbooks). At Alsanit, we design lockers and locker rooms that comply with standards. We make lockers from tested and approved materials. In Alsanit we make:

  • Vela clothing lockers green and blue, locker room metal lockers
  • Taurus pool lockers with HPL HPL board lockers
  • Combo office lockers white and blue Hybrid lockers (combination of metal and HPL)

In both types, color can be used, which is important for school and kindergarten infrastructure. In addition, lockers are modular, which affects not only reduced production costs, but also easy replacement in the event of damage to a particular component (such as a change in the front or a worn hinge). In schools, durable and long-lasting materials work well, so when designing and installing, Alsanit pays attention to the special specification of cabinets for school and kindergarten infrastructure. We offer cabinets that meet the requirements described in the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure.

  • Taurus– lockers of this type are made of durable HPL board, which is easy to clean, durable and resistant to mechanical damage. They are made to size taking into account the room. HPL boards for school locker rooms can be selected in various decors, but also in natural textures, such as stone, concrete or wood.
  • Combo– A modular solution that works best for school lockers. Doors made of lightweight and durable HPL board or MFC board, which is laminated particle board that is durable and resistant to moisture. Modular lockers are designed taking into account the destination. If a component is damaged, it can be easily replaced.

Checkroom in a kindergarten – what conditions must it meet?

Checkrooms for kindergartens must have the right dimensions and colors. Their location and layout in relation to the room, must provide freedom and safety for the youngest. The final appearance of the lockers depends on the number and the place where they are to be installed. Alsanit adapts the design to the room and looks for the best solution. A kindergarten locker room must include a clothes locker (with a hanger inside), a shoe locker, a bench or a pouf for changing shoes. At Alsanit, we offer three types of locker rooms for kindergartens.

  • Combo – are modular lockers that use HPL and MFC (laminated particleboard). Lockers of this type are mounted on legs or a pedestal. Benches can be added to them. These cabinets are available in a wide range of colors and in high-gloss (LPW).
  • Luxa– MFC modular cabinets, which are designed for the destination, but can still be modified if needed. They are characterized by durability, ease of cleaning, and a rich color palette.
  • Junior – available with or without doors adapted to the needs of the youngest users. The cabinets are made of MFC or HPL boards. Each cabinet component is carefully selected to be safe for the child.

Kindergarten lockers for locker rooms designed by Alsanit, meet the expectations of students in terms of color and design, but also help to maintain order in the checkroom.

Selection of appropriate locker rooms and lockers for school clothing and kindergartens is particularly important, as the design must take into account the applicable regulations and the safety of students. Alsanit designs checkrooms for kindergartens and schools in accordance with applicable approvals and standards.
